When William, widely known as Bill, was a child - this must have been around 1900, he was playing with a metal hoop as the did then and it ran into his leg badly damaging it. The medical treatment he received, if any, was poor and he subsequently always walked with a limp. He is seen in most pictures with a cane. Consequently he avoided service, and quite possibly death, in the First World War.
He worked in a factory that made glass rollers for, possibly, the leather industry.
The family home was in Lannoy Road in New Eltham
